Vincent van Gogh was born in the Dutch town of Groot-Zundert in 1853. In 1869, he went to The Hague to learn how to be an artist. From 1869 to 1876, he also worked in London, Brussels, and Paris. Later, he went to England and worked as a substitute teacher and preacher. He also studied theology for a short time. At age 25, he became a lay preacher and had his own pulpit in the southern Belgian town of Borinage. In 1880, van Gogh made up his mind to become a painter. He went back to his parents in Etten, where they lived at the time. After living in The Hague and the province of Drenthe, he went back to Nuenen to be with his parents. In 1886, he moved to Paris, where his brother Theo worked as an art dealer. Theo put him in touch with some of the most important artists in Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and van Gogh became close with Paul Gauguin. In 1888, he moved to Arles, which is in the south of France. At the end of that year, Gauguin went to see him there. Van Gogh's dream of an artists' group didn't last long. He had a terrible nervous breakdown and cut off part of his ear on the night of December 23. After more attacks, he went to a mental hospital near Saint-Rémy and checked himself in. In 1890, he moved to Auvers-Sur-Oise to see Dr. Paul Gachet for help. At the same time, someone bought the only painting by van Gogh that was sold during his lifetime. Van Gogh killed himself on July 27, 1890. He died after two days.
